The degree programme was designed in cooperation with companies and prepares the students for a successful career start by imparting widely applicable methodological skills and developing soft skills.
Modern automation systems are not only the basis for efficient production facilities, but also key to environmental technologies and renewable energies. Today, automation systems contain a number of intelligent components that are networked via industrial communication systems. Engineers who develop and implement creative automation solutions therefore need to have a well-rounded specialised knowledge in the areas of Technology, Computer Science and Communication Systems.
Graduates of both fields of study become development and project planning engineers or software developers in various industries, work in technical sales or as project managers for IT and software projects, are managing directors or owners of engineering firms or work at universities or research institutes in research and development.
Key Aspects Common to Both Fields of Study
Since both fields of study have an identical curriculum during the first two semesters, a field of study does not have to be selected until the second year.
The educational focus of the first three semesters is on the basics of science and engineering. This includes Computer Science and practical programming abilities.
Concepts of measurement and control engineering, digital and microcomputer technology, object-oriented programming, concepts of industrial communication systems, business management foundations and English are taught in special courses.
During the fifth and sixth semesters, the students can choose two of three specialisations, which are offered according to majority vote. Individual elective courses and projects complement the study programme.
Besides specialised knowledge, social and soft skills are taught in a practical manner. Individual project assignments foster creativity and independence. Laboratory work in groups and the presentation of project results improve communication skills. Project management and cooperation are sampled at first hand in a team project.
The work placement and the bachelor thesis round off the degree programme and usually enable a seamless transition into professional life without the stress of applications.
This field of study with a stronger technical focus intensifies not only the core subjects of Automation Systems, but also key areas such as Industrial Robots, Electronic Circuit Technology, and Signal Transmission Drive Engineering.
Students can choose from the following specialisations:
This field of study combines technology with Computer Science. Besides the core subjects of Automation Systems, concepts of Computer Science are taught, such as Software Engineering, Database Applications and Internet Programming.
