The Centre of Competence was established within the framework of the Excellence Initiative by the Ministry of Education in Saxony-Anhalt and is part of the Saxony-Anhalt-wide "Competency Network for Applied and Transfer-Oriented Research (KAT)".

Prof. Dr. habil. Frieder Stolzenburg, Prorector for Research and Technology Transfer, provides administrative and scientific leadership for the Centre of Competence.

Competency Network for Applied and Transfer-Oriented Research (KAT):

Within the framework of Saxony-Anhalt's excellence initiative, KAT was launched as a focal point for excellence. The focal points within the individual centres of competence also represent important focal points in research and teaching of the individual universities.

The KAT consists of four Centres of Competence at the four Universities of Applied Sciences in Saxony-Anhalt.

(1) Natural sciences, chemistry/plastics at the Hochschule Merseburg (FH)

(2) Information and communication technologies, tourism and services at the Hochschule Harz (FH)

(3) Renewable resources at the Hochschule Magdeburg-Stendal (FH

(4) Life Sciences at the Hochschule Anhalt (FH)

Dual function:

Creation of focused competence centres at the universities (of applied sciences) to establish ideal conditions for development of new technologies and methods in cooperation with universities, non-academic research institutions as well as the local economy and administration

Realisation of the universities' entire knowledge transfer (also for non-core elements) to enterprises and institutions in the corresponding region via these centres of competence; transition from offer-based knowledge transfer to demand-based transfer. The principle: local acquisition - global processing.
