In addition to competent tourism management training at the Hochschule Harz, the degree programme International Tourism Studies incorporates a two-semester study visit to a partner university and an internship abroad. Above-average English or French language skills are a pre-requisite for admission to the course of studies and are developed in intensive courses during the course of studies.
In Wernigerode both the content-related basics for the study programme are laid down and knowledge already acquired within an occupational field is deepened in the first four semesters. During their study abroad, students are provided with an insight into the culture of the relevant host country and attend scheduled courses at the partner universities. After completion of the study abroad, the course of studies including the colloquium on the Bachelor's thesis is completed at the Hochschule Harz. Together with the Bachelor from the Hochschule Harz, students obtain a degree from the relevant partner university.
1st – 4th Semester
During the first four semesters, students taking the International Business Studies double degree programme mostly attend regular courses offered by the Business Administration degree programme. This is designed to ensure a uniform standard for all students of Business Studies at Hochschule Harz as well as mastery of the basic interrelationships, methods and tools. German is usually the language of instruction.
In addition to acquiring the basics of business and tourism, students of the degree programme in International Tourism Studies already begin a two-semester deepening of their tourism-specific professional field orientations in the third semester. Three professional fields must be chosen from the regular range of professional field orientations in the Tourism Management degree programme. This ensures that students can obtain qualifications matching their interests in the tourism sector and subsequently make a successful career entry in this field. This degree programme also places particularly high demands on students.
5th – 7th Semester
The structure and content of the study programme in the fifth and sixth semesters are determined by the respective partner university abroad, which awards the students a degree (usually a Bachelor's degree).
Students must then complete a work placement of at least 12 weeks' duration. This work placement is designed not only to provide students with an insight into tourist activities, but also to impart knowledge about foreign tourist structures, ways of working and work ethics. Students are given a unique opportunity to acquire knowledge and connections which could be of help to them in their future professional lives.
As a basic rule, the Bachelor's thesis should be written while abroad, usually pertaining to the specifics of the work placement. A colloquium on this thesis is held upon return to Hochschule Harz from the study abroad.
