The aim of the Master's degree programme is both to obtain an in-depth scientific and application-oriented qualification in the field of Computer Science and to obtain in-depth knowledge and skills in the area of mobile computer systems and their applications. The study programme is aligned with two strategic Computer Science growth areas:
Mobile Information Systems and Mobile Robots.
These core areas comprise comprehensive mobile computer use in all areas ("Pervasive Computing"). Some of the special challenges facing mobile systems consist in being able to react to changing environmental conditions, faults and errors in a tolerant manner. Furthermore, they have to be secured against unauthorised use and guarantee efficient and intelligent access to contextual information at any given time and place.
Teaching mobile systems these skills requires mastery of complex Computer Science concepts and methods as well as related areas in order to be able to develop suitable solutions for different fields of application. This Master's degree programme conveys these concepts, methods and practical knowledge.
Key aspects of the degree programme:
The students are integrated into current research projects at Hochschule Harz in the area of mobile systems and applications, enabling them to put the skills which they have acquired into practice. Subjects range from Mobile Geoinformation Systems, Mobile Tourist Guides to Mobile eCommerce/eGovernment and multimedia applications right through to mobile robots.
It is expected that the Degree programme will be able to be taken in conjunction with employment, commencing from the 2010 Summer Semester. The vast majority of courses in this extra-occupational Master’s degree programme will take place on Friday afternoons and Saturdays, with there being only four to five attendance weeks throughout the first academic year. The third semester is intended for the Master’s research paper which can be written either in a company or at a university and may be used as a stepping stone to a doctorate at a later stage.
