The Tourism Management degree programme already enables entry to the future sector of tourism after seven semesters by conferring the degree of "Bachelor of Arts". Internationalisation of university education lays the foundation for additional student mobility and flexibility. Study visits abroad are made possible during the study programme as a result of academic achievements being recognised internationally. This internationalisation enables graduates to enter into careers in the internationally oriented tourism sector.
The contents of the degree programmes are broad-based in line with the variety of business segments in the tourism industry and range from aspects of package holidays right through to those of business travel.
Emphasis is placed on practical training based on business orientation. This includes solving practical problems related to managing hotels, transportation, destinations and tour operators.
Students are equipped with skills which allow them to actively support the management of companies in the tourism industry and solve practical problems in business and administrative functional areas. Moreover, they are enabled to take over future management tasks in tourism companies and organisations or take first steps towards becoming self-employed.
The significance of the business orientation is reflected in the first three semesters: In addition to the basics of Business Administration, accounting, financial management and business mathematics, the problems of economics, statistics as well as tax and legal issues are taught. Introductory courses lay the foundation for entry into the tourism industry (Basics of Tourism as well as Introduction to Tourism Management). The development of foreign language skills as well as training in EDP (Office applications) and in learning and presentation techniques is another key aspect.
In the fourth semester, the knowledge acquired in the first three semesters is consolidated in a work placement of at least 16 weeks' duration. Alternatively, it is also possible to complete a semester at an international partner university.
The fifth and sixth semesters focus on the students' professional orientation, developing independent applied working practices through project work, enhancing students' foreign language skills (English and a second foreign language) and undertaking the concluding work placement along with the Bachelor's thesis.
The professional field is specified by selecting at least three professional field orientations in the tourism industry.
The following professional fields are currently being offered:
* Tourism Management with the management tasks of tour operators and travel agencies
* Hotel Management with variegated tasks in this tourist segment of private and business stays
* Business Travel Management deals with various aspects of business travel including trade fair and exhibition tourism
* Destination Management places emphasis on mediating managerial responsibilities in the destination including professional operational execution
* Mobility and Transportation Management places emphasis on the problems confronted by airlines and railway companies or the management of bus companies and ocean carriers
* Tourism Marketing places special emphasis on customer, competition and market-oriented approaches in management including the teaching of methods.
As the tourism industry is intensively supported and influenced by the application of information and communication technologies, practical EDP training in the relevant occupational fields is also included in the specific contents. Ample hardware and sector-specific software are available for this training.
A topic which is researched in-depth as part of the Bachelor’s thesis is chosen on the basis of the experience gained during the work placement of at least 12 weeks' duration in one of the tourism industry segments either in Germany or abroad. During the subsequent colloquium, students are given the opportunity to display the knowledge they have acquired in the form of a presentation.
The teachers on the Bachelor's degree programme in Tourism Management have long-standing professional expertise in tourism industry management, solid teaching experience and are recognised through specialist publications and the undertaking of academic research projects.
